Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel submitted a proposal this week that would prevent cable and TV providers from charging early-termination fees to customers exiting their contracts. The five-member commission will vote on the proposal on December 13. If the vote passes, the rule would go into effect, adding another policy to the attempt by President Biden’s administration to eliminate “junk fees.”
“When companies charge customers early termination fees, it limits their freedom to choose the service they want,” said Chairwoman Rosenworcel in her proposal. “In an increasingly competitive media market, we should make it easier for Americans to use their purchasing power to promote innovation and expand competition within the industry.”
